Dagenham Area: Location and History

Dagenham is a district of East London within the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Dagenham was a quaint Essex village surrounded by countryside and farmland until the 1920’s when work on the Becontree estate began. Becontree created 27,000 new houses, the largest public housing project ever attempted. A few old buildings in Dagenham Village remain, including a 12th-century church and vicarage, a war memorial and a grade II listed pub.

Dagenham is most famous for its (now declining) car manufacturing industry. In 1931 Ford Motor Company relocated to Dagenham and became Europe’s largest car plant. At its peak, Ford Dagenham employed over 40,000 people. In 2002 vehicle assembly ceased; now, it only builds engines and employs around 2,000 people.

More recently, the southern part of Dagenham along the River Thames has benefitted from significant regeneration.

Why Dagenham

Dagenham is popular with first-time buyers because it has some of the cheapest housing within an easy commute of central London.

The area is up and coming with new plans to relocate London’s three historic markets, Smithfield meat market, Billingsgate fish market and New Spitalfields fruit and flower markets to Dagenham. This move is expected to bring a hub of independent restaurants to the area and create many new jobs. We think Dagenham is an area to watch for those looking for a good investment opportunity.

There are many primary schools in Dagenham, and most are rated either outstanding or good by Ofsted. The gov.uk website has a list of primary schools within 1 mile of Dagenham.

There is also a good choice of secondary education in the area.

By train… 

Dagenham has three tube stations, all on the district line: Becontree, Dagenham East and Dagenham Heathway. Dagenham Dock mainline station has trains to into Fenchurch Street and out towards Grays in Essex.

By bus… 

Dagenham is served by many London bus routes connecting the area with central London and nearby suburbs.

By road… 

Dagenham is close to the A13 providing access to Essex and the M25 London Orbital.

Dagenham has several shopping centres to satisfy the day-to-day shopping needs of residents. Heathway Shopping centre near Dagenham Heathway tube station has a variety of shops, including Boots and Wilko’s. Nearby Gallions Reach Shopping Park has many high street stores, free parking and kids activities. The Merrielands Shopping Centre has an Argos, TK Maxx and B&M . There are even more shops to browse within the largest Dagenham estate (Becontree). There is also a good range of supermarkets, with Asda and Aldi accessibly placed just off the A13.

Valence House Museum is the only suriving manor house in Dagenham and is now an engaging museum with informative displays on local history. There are activities for young children and a café. Hollywood Bowl Dagenham has 20 bowling lanes, an American themed diner serving a variety of food, a bar and an amusements area.

Dagenham residents benefit from many green open spaces. Mayesbrook Park is a pleasant place to walk or cycle. There is a kids playground and a pretty lake where Barking Canoe club offers beginners sessions on Saturdays. Parsloes Park between Becontree and Dagenham Heathway is a large open space perfect for walking, running, or kicking a football around. The park regularly hosts funfairs.

The Chase Nature Reserve near Dagenham East is one of London’s best urban nature reserves with an impressive array of animals and plant life. The network of footpaths makes it a perfect destination for a weekend stroll.
