The Borough of Newham was made in 1965, merging the boroughs of West Ham and East Ham, which are home to London’s historic docklands. During the early 20th century these Royal Docks were a core part of the area, spanning over 12 miles of Thames riverside – before eventually fading in significance.
However, the London Olympics in 2012 transformed Newham from a little know borough to a top residential and leisure location. The Olympic stadiums and arenas provide world-class sporting facilities to local residents, and Westfield Stratford City is Europe’s largest shopping mall. Since then, the area has flourished in the face of redevelopment and a host of new facilities. The boroughs main districts are Beckton, Custom House, East Ham, Forest Gate, Plaistow, Stratford and West Ham.
Newham has one of the youngest populations in the country, and is one of the most culturally diverse. Newham also has excellent transport links to Canary Wharf and the City of London, and well as exceptional schools and green spaces. There’s also a wealth of state-of-the-art sports facilities left in the wake of the 2012 Olympics. Homes are also very affordable, by London standards, making Newham a popular choice for young professionals and families alike.
There are almost 90 primary schools and 30 secondary schools in Newham, with many rated ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ by Ofsted.
