South Woodford: Location and History

South Woodford is an area of east London in the borough of Redbridge. It is highly residential and benefits from considerable green space giving the area a more rural feel than its E18 postcode would suggest.

The area developed rapidly in the 19th century, and most of the housing is spacious Edwardian and Victorian terraced or semi-detached properties on tree-lined streets. There are also modern developments of purpose-built flats such as Queen Mary’s Gate.

Drivers have easy access to the M25 and M11 via the North Circular ring road.

South Woodford has a diverse range of local independent shops intermingled with national chains. The main shopping area is around South Woodford Station, George Lane and along High Road.

There’s a Waitrose, M&S Food, and Sainsbury’s and an independent International Supermarket stocking a diverse selection of fresh fruit and vegetables and top quality food products you won’t find in other chains.

South Woodford has its own Odeon cinema, and there are plenty of restaurants from Turkish to Thai and Indian to Italian to enjoy a meal with family and friends.

Woodford is surrounded by open space with Epping Forest offering walking trails from Wanstead to Epping. There are also pretty paths along the river Rodding to explore.
