Croydon Area: Location and History

The London Borough of Croydon is located in south London. At its centre is the historic town of Croydon, from which the borough takes its name. Other urban centres include Coulsdon, Purley, South Norwood, Norbury, New Addington and Thornton Heath.

Croydon has a long history and has been a prosperous market town throughout the ages. As a result, there is a wide range of homes available in Croydon. There are Edwardian and Victorian houses, charming Arts and Crafts style homes and properties built in the Sixties and Seventies.

There is also an abundant supply of new homes, including Saffron Square Tower, a sparkly purple and red apartment block visible for miles around. Alongside the new homes are conversions of older and period buildings. For instance, Leon House comprises high-specification new homes in a converted 1960’s office block. The big detached Edwardian and Victorian houses offer development opportunities as period conversion flats.

Why Croydon

CR could be the coolest postcode in Greater London. The borough is young, upbeat and full of exciting regeneration projects. Its train services are enviable. You can be at London Bridge in 15 minutes from South and East Croydon stations or London Victoria in 20 minutes. Croydon is also part of London’s tram network connecting those who live outside the town of Croydon to one of the main stations. Gatwick Airport is a short drive or train journey away if you want to go further afield.

Croydon has many green spaces perfect for a stroll when you need time out from your busy daily life. And with over 100 primary and secondary schools, many of which are rated outstanding or good, Croydon is also popular with families.

Croydon is all about top-notch transport connections…

By train…

There are direct and frequent trains to Central London, Gatwick Airport and Brighton.
From East Croydon train station, there are trains to London Bridge, Victoria, City Thameslink and St Pancras (all mostly 15-20 mins) as well as to Clapham Junction (9 mins) and out to Surrey, Sussex and Gatwick (15 mins). West Croydon is on the Overground, giving access to east London and beyond.

By bus…

There are many bus routes around Croydon connecting the out–lying residential areas with Croydon town centre.

By road…

It is also very easy to jump in the car and get to the M25 or M23 in no time.

Croydon has many great shopping options in the local area. The Centrale & Whitgift Shopping Centre is a large retail complex in the centre of Croydon. All your favourite shops are here, including Zara, Next and Marks and Spencer branches. There is also a variety of coffee shops, play cafes and restaurants when you want a break from shopping. Westfield is currently in talks with the local council about possibly regenerating the Whitgift Centre.

Surrey Street Market in Croydon town centre is one of the oldest street markets in Britain. Alongside the traditional market stalls are interactive street theatre and outdoor musical entertainment. In December, there are various Christmas-themed events.

Croydon is a great place to eat out, with many great restaurants to choose from. Boxpark is a wonderland of good food and drink choices, including Greek cuisine, Sri Lankan street food, American-style burgers, sushi and more. South Croydon’s restaurant quarter is home to Bagattis and Little Bay, and elsewhere you have top-rated restaurants such as Las Fuentes (in both Purley and Selsdon), Yaalu Yaalu and McDermott’s fish and chips.

The Croydon local area has many stunning outdoor spaces. South Norwood Country Park and Lloyd Park are large green spaces perfect for a stroll. The Farthing Downs and Happy Valley near Coulsdon have excellent walking trails to take in the beautiful rolling chalk grassland and wildflowers.

There is also plenty of culture. The RISEGallery specialises in modern urban contemporary, and Fairfield Halls host many concerts.
