Redbridge is a London Borough situated in north-east London. It includes areas such as Woodford, Barkingside, Hainault, Newbury Park, Wanstead, Ilford, Seven Kings and Goodmayes.
Remains of Roman settlements have been uncovered in the area and the villages of Wanstead (Wenesteda), Woodford (Wdefort), and Ilford (Ilefort) are mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book. From the 16th century, there were country manors in the Woodford area, but with the arrival of suburban railways in the mid-19th century, country estates and farmland were replaced by housing developments.
Did you know… the only complete skull of a mammoth was unearthed in nearby Ilford in 1864, the skull can now be seen in the Natural History Museum. Local Redbridge Museum has a cast of the skull along with other prehistoric animal remains.
Redbridge is renowned as one of London’s leafier suburbs. It is a family orientated borough at heart and possesses many thriving shopping areas and several cultural hotspots. There are excellent schools, numerous green spaces and parks, great rail networks and easy access to the A406 and A12.
There are many different areas within Redbridge. Woodford is a quiet and prosperous suburb with plenty of parks, good schools and an easy commute into the city – thanks to the Central Line. Another hot spot is the Wansted Flats, the most expensive area in the borough. At the more affordable end of the scale is Gants Hill, Seven Kings and Ilford, all bustling and friendly places.
