Redbridge Area: Location And History

Redbridge is a London Borough situated in north-east London. It includes areas such as Woodford, Barkingside, Hainault, Newbury Park, Wanstead, Ilford, Seven Kings and Goodmayes. 

Remains of Roman settlements have been uncovered in the area and the villages of Wanstead (Wenesteda), Woodford (Wdefort), and Ilford (Ilefort) are mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book. From the 16th century, there were country manors in the Woodford area, but with the arrival of suburban railways in the mid-19th century, country estates and farmland were replaced by housing developments. 

Did you know… the only complete skull of a mammoth was unearthed in nearby Ilford in 1864, the skull can now be seen in the Natural History Museum.  Local Redbridge Museum has a cast of the skull along with other prehistoric animal remains. 

Why Redbridge 

Redbridge is renowned as one of London’s leafier suburbs. It is a family orientated borough at heart and possesses many thriving shopping areas and several cultural hotspots.  There are excellent schools, numerous green spaces and parks, great rail networks and easy access to the A406 and A12. 

There are many different areas within Redbridge. Woodford is a quiet and prosperous suburb with plenty of parks, good schools and an easy commute into the city – thanks to the Central Line. Another hot spot is the Wansted Flats, the most expensive area in the borough.  At the more affordable end of the scale is Gants Hill, Seven Kings and Ilford, all bustling and friendly places.

London and Essex are easily accessible from Redbridge, as the Borough is served by a variety of public transport services. 

By train… 

Redbridge is served by the Central Line, the Borough has 10 underground stations all located in Travelcard Zone 4. 

There are 4 main line stations in Redbridge: Chadwell Heath, Goodmayes, Iflord and Seven Kings with trains between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield, Essex. 

Stratford International is only 8 minutes away on the train and it’s around 18 minutes to London Liverpool Street. 

By bus… 

More than 40 bus routes run through and within the borough, including the No 25 from Ilford town centre to Oxford Circus or the No 86 from Ilford town centre to Stratford town centre. 

By road… 

Redbridge is well served by a number of major road networks including the A12, north circular A406, M11 and M25. 

When it comes to shopping, the districts of Redbridge have a little bit of everything.  From high street staples to smaller independent outlets. 

Supermarkets are plentiful, with Waitrose, M&S Simply Food, Tesco, Sainsburys, Aldi and Asda all present. 

The Exchange Shopping Centre located in the heart of Ilford has everything you need, from gadgets to fashion.  Westfield Stratford City is easily reached by public transport and road with all your favourite stores as well as a huge foodhall and excellent cinema. 

You’ll feel a million miles away from the city at Hainault Forest Country Park.  Stroll around the gorgeous woodland and don’t miss a visit to the petting zoo and lake for the ultimate day out. 

Visit Redbridge Museum and explores the many different people, places and events which are part of the history of Redbridge. 

Fairlop Waters Country Park is a beautiful country park located in Redbridge.   Outdoor adventurers can get stuck into windsurfing, sailing and angling on the waters. There’s also a high-ropes course, a climbing wall and aqua bounce for adrenaline junkies. For those who fancy a more sedate day out can take a tranquil stroll around the lakes and forest. 

Our property was on the market for a long time, due to it being an old house that had not been modernised. Sandra Davidson were so good, they marketed it so that a lot of people to view the property, and kept us informed of progress the whole way through. They also have an online feature that allows you to see who has viewed the house; comments they have made and whether offers were made or not. We found this really useful because we were able to get an idea of why our property was not selling as fast as it could have done. The staff themselves were always lovely - so polite, helpful and respectful. We as a family will always remember how kind they were to our dad when he suffered an accident outside their premises years beforehand, not hesitating to rush out and help.
