Enfield is a London borough in North London. The main towns are Edmonton, Enfield Town, Southgate and Palmers Green. Historically, Enfield was a collection of small settlements and market towns on the edge of Epping Forest.
Many fine examples of listed period buildings remain, including Gentleman’s Row, an enclave of fine Georgian properties in Enfield overlooking the New River. Today Enfield includes thriving suburbs like Winchmore Hill, offering a range of recreational activities, excellent transport connections and bustling shopping centres.
Situated in North London, Enfield forms the northernmost borough of the capital, bordered by the M25 motorway and Hertfordshire countryside to the north. Families come to Enfield drawn by the combined appeal of country living, acres of green space and easy access to central London. There is a wide range of housing types, including period Georgian and Victorian properties, semi-detached and terraced homes built in the 1920s and 1930s, and new-build houses and flats. House prices are reasonable by London standards, Enfield is one of the cheaper London boroughs in which to buy a property.
The area has evolved from its Saxon beginnings when it was recorded in the Domesday Book as “Enefelde,” through several centuries of agricultural prominence, to the suburban district it is today. The borough gained significance during Tudor times when Elizabeth I often visited Elsyng Palace and later hunted in Enfield Chase, a vast woodland that once covered much of the area. The Royal Small Arms Factory, established in 1816, brought industrial development to the eastern part of Enfield, producing firearms for the British military until its closure in 1988.
Enfield Town maintains its market town feel with pedestrianised streets and buildings dating back to the 16th century. This contrasts with the eastern areas like Ponders End and Brimsdown, which developed as industrial zones in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today’s Enfield houses a culturally varied population of approximately 330,000 people. The area attracts families looking for more space than inner London offers, professionals commuting via the borough’s good transport links, and long-term locals with multi-generational ties to the area.
Schools in Enfield are generally good, with 16 schools in the borough rated outstanding by Ofsted. The renowned Enfield Grammar school, established in 1558, is actually a comprehensive school with excellent academic success.
