Tower Hamlets Area: Location and History

The east London borough of Tower Hamlets encompasses much of the traditional East End. The borough lies on the north bank of the Thames just to the east of the City of London. Tower Hamlets is a variety of contrasts from the towering office buildings and luxurious residential properties in Canary Wharf to Brick Lane, which snakes from Bethnal Green towards Whitechapel, and is a paradise for bargain hunters, foodies and fashionistas. A part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is in Tower Hamlets.

From the late 19th century, Tower Hamlets was synonymous with poverty, overcrowding, disease, and criminality. Some of the worst slums in London were found in the area. The closure of London’s docklands and severe bombing in the second world war left Tower Hamlets with derelict land and buildings. More recently, funding has been poured into the area attracting new businesses, building new homes and improving local services.

Why Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets is popular with the young crowd attracted by below-average property prices and trendy neighbourhoods. It is the youngest London borough, with more than a third of the population between 20 and 34. Property investors would be wise to consider Tower Hamlets as rents are higher than the London average and are expected to grow at a faster rate.

By train… 

Tower Hamlets is well connected with tube and train links crisscrossing the borough. The Central Line, Hammersmith and City Line and District Line all have stations across Tower Hamlets. It is also served by the London Overground, Elizabeth Line and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

By bus…

By road… 

The A13 runs east to west through the borough carrying traffic to the North Circular and M25. North-to-south routes include the A12 linking Tower Hamlets with Essex in the north and the Blackwall Tunnel to the south.

There are three River Thames crossings in Tower Hamlets, Tower Bridge (Tower Hill to Southwark and Bermondsey), the Rotherhithe Tunnel (Limehouse to Rotherhithe) and the Blackwall Tunnel (Poplar to Greenwich).

Tower Hamlets is home to some of the most iconic markets in London. Head to the renowned Colombia Road Flower Market for colourful displays. Old Spitalfields Market is famous for its artists, goods, designer stores, outdoor events, street food and modern cafes, restaurants and bars. Brick Lane is jam-packed with vintage shops and indoor markets.

If you prefer modern shopping centres, head for Canary Wharf. With more than 120 stores across 5 shopping malls, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Shops include small boutiques, designer labels and high-street staples.

The leisure activities in Tower Hamlets are just as varied.

  • In districts like Shoreditch, Bow and Stepney Green, find modern art galleries, trendy cocktail bars, pubs and street food stalls.
  • Victoria Park in Bethnal Green is a great place for a weekend run or to enjoy a stroll and lunch from its Sunday market. There are three lakes, a children’s playground and numerous places to grab a coffee.
  • The Tower of London is in Tower Hamlets, a historic castle where you can visit the crown jewels.
  • Mudchute Park and Farm on the Isle of Dogs is also worth a visit, especially if you have young children. It’s home to British rare breeds, horses and ponies, plus a pet’s corner and animal encounter experiences. There’s also an excellent farm shop on site.
