Why Silvertown

Formally an industrial area in London’s docklands, Silvertown is now a popular place to live, thanks to its DLR stations that opened in December 2005. Silvertown is popular with young professionals looking for affordable, newly built apartments.

Silvertown is located east of Canary Wharf between the river Thames and both The Royal Victoria Dock and Gallions Point Marina. Silvertown has an industrial heritage. It is named after Stephen William Silver, who set up the first factory in the area in 1852. From the mid-19th century to the late 1970s, Silvertown was occupied by riverside factories, docks and warehouses.

Like much of the London docklands, Silvertown suffered a decline as many factories closed. Recent regeneration projects have revived the area as a waterside destination to live, work and play. There are a few terraced houses in Silvertown, but most housing is newly built apartment towers.

Silvertown has a slightly lower percentage of children under 15 years than the rest of London. However, it still offers an excellent provision of both primary and secondary education.

Silvertown has three primary schools; Britannia Village Primary School (Ofsted rating: outstanding), Royal Wharf Primary School (Ofsted rating: not rated) and Drew Primary School (Ofsted rating: good).

The two closest secondary schools to Silvertown are Oasis Academy Silvertown and Royal Docks Academy. Both are co-educational schools for children aged 11 to 16 rated good by Ofsted. Slightly further to the north, Brampton Manor Academy is an outstanding school with a sixth form. Nearby Newham Sixth Form College offers a wide range of courses, including A-Levels, T-Levels and many vocational qualifications.

By train… 

Silvertown West is on the DLR, and there are also stops for Pontoon Dock, London City Airport and King George V. The DLR meets the Jubilee Line relatively nearby at Canning Town.

By bus… 

The area is reasonably well served by buses. There is also a free ferry crossing and foot tunnel to Woolwich.

By road… 

There are easy road links to the North Circular and the A13, which joins the M25 at junction 30.

Nearby Canary Wharf has a large shopping centre with more than 120 stores, from small boutiques to high-street brands. For groceries and everyday shopping needs, Gallions Reach Shopping Park has a Tesco superstore and several pharmacies, clothing and shoe stores.

The Thames Barrier Park is a popular spot for cycling, running, or a quiet stroll to enjoy the view of the river Thames and the Thames barrier.

You can also enjoy beautiful views of the Thames and London’s skyline from the Emirates Air Line cable car, which links Silvertown’s Royal Docks with the Greenwich Peninsula.

Silvertown also boasts its own beach on the embankment of The Royal Victoria Docks. Find fitness classes, outdoor movie screenings and a hip terrace bar – unfortunately, swimming is not permitted. However, if you want to take to the water, WakeUp Docklands offers cable wakeboarding, standup paddleboarding and hydrofoiling.

The neighbourhood offers a range of local restaurants, pubs and bars. Residents head to Canary Wharf or across the river to Woolwich (via the free ferry) for shopping and nightlife.
