Bromley Area: Location and History

The London Borough of Bromley is the south-eastern most of the London boroughs. It is named after Bromley, its principal town; other major towns are Beckenham, Orpington, West Wickham, Crystal Palace, Cray Valley, Penge, Anerley and Biggin Hill.

Bromley has a long history dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. The town grew in significance in the 13th century when the Bishop of Rochester established a residence there. It is the Bishop who is responsible for establishing the weekly market that is still running today. The market, together with its position on the main road made Bromley the most important settlement in the district.

Bromley was relatively late to the railway revolution; it didn’t get its first station until 1858. As a result, growth lagged behind other towns such as Croydon and Lewisham. Once the railway was running Bromley again became a popular location. Initially, the homes built were small cottages, followed by larger houses in Bromley Park. Since the mid 20th century, the main developments have been conversions or replacements of larger houses with smaller modern flats. As a result, property types are diverse, with a mixture of traditional Victorian homes and modern apartment blocks.

Sandra Davidson were so good, they marketed it so that a lot of people to view the property, and kept us informed of progress the whole way through. They also have an online feature that allows you to see who has viewed the house; comments they have made and whether offers were made or not. We found this really useful because we were able to get an idea of why our property was not selling as fast as it could have done. The staff themselves were always lovely - so polite, helpful and respectful. We as a family will always remember how kind they were to our dad when he suffered an accident outside their premises years beforehand, not hesitating to rush out and help.
