Collier Row Area: Location and History

Collier Row is an area of Romford Essex in East London. Its name originates from the colliers active in the region from the 15th and 16th centuries. They made their living making charcoal by burning wood from the surrounding forest. Until the mid-1920, Collier Row remained a rural village.

Following the creation of Eastern Avenue (A12) in the mid-1920s, several property developers arrived in the district. The largest of these was TF Nash, who bought a substantial area of land north of Collier Row Road and built a housing estate of 9,000 homes. Consequently, most of the housing stock in Collier Row is Thirties semis. Collier Row also has plenty of bungalows, both detached and semi-detached.
