Grays Area: Location And History

The town of Grays is situated on the north bank of the River Thames, approximately 20 miles to the east of central London.  Grays is the largest town in the Thurrock area and lies within the county of Essex. 

 Grays was formerly a small port, with chalk quarries, brickworks, and a brewery. Growth started slowing with a few terraces of cottages being built for the workers in the chalk quarries and brickworks.  Grays then grew rapidly in the late 19th century stimulated by the coming of the railway, the continuing development of local industries and the opening of the neighbouring Tilbury docks.  

Grays is set of a multi-million pound regeneration of the town centre and Grays Beach.  The project also includes the creation of a new theatre and support and more than 4,500 new homes. 

Why Grays 

Grays offers everything from Victorian and Edwardian family houses to one-bedroom new flats.  Its big bonuses are excellent transport links to central London and its planned regeneration. 

Schooling is of mainly a high standard and the area benefits from the thriving shopping areas of Lakeside and Bluewater.  Excellent road links make the beautiful Essex countryside and the Norfolk coast easily accessible. 

Grays offers good value for money for first time buyers, families in search of a larger home and buy-to-let investors for the next upcoming area.   

The local schools include a number that are rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.  Grays Convent School and The Hathaway Academy are both Ofsted-rated ‘good’, while Quarry Hill primary school is rated ‘outstanding’.

By train… 

From Grays railway station you can access London Fenchurch Street in around 40 minutes, there are trains.  On an average weekday, there are 92 trains travelling from London Fenchurch Street to Grays. 

By bus… 

Grays bus station is a hub for most bus routes in the Thurrock area, as result is it well served by bus services.  The bus services are operated by Ensignbus, First Essex and NIBS Buses. 

By road… 

Grays is just two miles from the Dartford Tunnel and M25, and has great connections to the A13, the main road into London. 

Grays benefits from its location close to the popular shopping facilities of Lakeside and Bluewater where you can indulge in some retail therapy as well as enjoy the leisure facilities on site. 

 

 

On the edge of the Thames Estuary, Grays offers some fantastic natural scenery and areas to explore. In fact, there are two nature reserves on the doorstep: Grays Chalk Quarry and Chafford Gorges. 

Both Lakeside and Bluewater offer excellent leisure facilities, including trampoline parks, bowling, cinema as well as a large selection of bars and restaurants.
