Upminster Area: Location and History

Upminster is a suburban town in East London in the London Borough of Havering. Until the early 20th century, Upminster remained a largely rural area. Several important period buildings remain, including one of London’s few remaining windmills, a 15th-century tithe barn, now a local museum, and a medieval manor house which now belongs to the local golf club.

Although the mainline railway arrived in Upminster in 1885, urbanisation didn’t start in earnest until 1906, when the District Line opened. Some Edwardian houses can be found close to the town centre, but most of the housing stock is 1930’s detached or semi-detached properties. To the northeast of Upminster station, the Upminster Park Estate was built in the 1950s and 1960s. More recently, a few new build houses and modern blocks of flats have been added, but there are minimal new home developments in Upminster, which is part of its charm.

Why Upminster

Upminster is popular with families for its leafy streets, open spaces and good schools all within easy commute of central London. The Thirties houses are spacious with extensive gardens and easily extended to accommodate modern family living.

Residents love Upminster because it combines the convenience of city living with proximity to Essex’s picturesque open countryside.

Primary Schools
All the local state primary schools are rated “good” by Ofsted, with Upminster Infants receiving an “outstanding”.

Secondary Schools
Hall Mead School, to the north of Upminster town centre, and Gaynes School, to the south, are both state comprehensive, co-eductional schools taking children from 11 to 16. Hall Mead is the most popular and is rated “outstanding” by Ofsted.

There are two local faith schools, Sacred Heart of Mary Girls’ School, a Catholic school for girls aged 11-18 and The Coopers’ Company and Coborn School is a multi-faith school co-educational school for pupils age 11 to 16.

Most local children go on to attend Havering Sixth Form College in nearby Hornchurch.

By train… 

Trains to Fenchurch Street from Upminster station take around 25 minutes. The station is also the most easterly station on the District line with frequent trains into central London. There are also Overground trains to Romford. Upminster is in fare zone 6.

By bus… 

There is an excellent bus network in the area with services to Canning Town, Stratford, Leytonstone, Romford, Hornchurch, Thurrock and Dagenham.

By road… 

Upminster is next to junction 29 on the M25.

Upminster has an attractive town centre with plenty of shops and restaurants to meet everyday needs. It has its own department store, Roomes of Upminster, selling furniture and homeware as well as fashion, beauty and accessories.
There is Waitrose and M&S Simply Food and several independent food stores.

The two local parks are Upminster Park and Clock House Gardens. Upminster Park has a children’s playground, refreshment kiosk, tennis courts and sports pitches. Clock House Gardens is an ornamental garden with a medieval moat.

Delightful walks can be had along the River Ingrebourne from Upminster to Hornchurch Country Park.

Upminster is a sporty place with clubs for many different sports. Upminster Golf Club in Hall Lane is one of the region’s top private members’ clubs. There are two tennis clubs, Grosvenor LTC and Cranston Park LTC and there is a cricket club and hockey club both based in Upminster park.

Slightly further afield, the Essex countryside with its picturesque villages is waiting to be explored.
